In an interview with AP, Martelly said reconcilation is more important to Haiti than seeking justice for human rights violations and corruption.
Former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier was forced into exile in 1986 and returned briefly after the earthquake.
Surprisingly, I agree with Martelly.
I think a lengthy trial and the money spent prosecuting Duvalier would only add more pain to the fragile nation.
“My way of thinking is to create a situation where we rally everyone together and create peace and pardon people, to not forget about the past — because we need to learn from it — but to mainly think about the future,” Martelly said.
“You cannot forget those who suffered in that time, but I do believe that we need that reconciliation in Haiti.”
Should Duvalier face the music?
